We also had several boxes from a "smokers" home.   We build a "rack" out of
some of our chrome shelves and covered it in heavy plastic, (taped all the
edges closed) placing several books inside along  with charcoal and baking
soda.  We also placed a air cleaner and small fan at the bottom to
help circulate the air inside our sealed area.  It took several weeks and
several changes of charcoal and baking soda to rid of the smell.
