I just created a feedback area for an exhibit exploring family stories
through the work of eight contemporary artists. We placed a thin 4 x 8 piece
of sheet metal on the wall and stenciled desired text on the top of the
metal. At an adjacent table visitors found white index cards, golf pencils
and instructions on what we wanted them to write about (in this case, a
story/memory/drawing which commented on their own connections to
family/culture/community.) We purchased a few hundred small, round
inexpensive magnets ("flex dots"--Part# 12H-F-- 1/2 diameter x 1/4"
thick--500 for $34.00) from Magnet Sales (phone 1-800-421-6692 ext.360).
Visitors wrote and illustrated their comments and used the magnet dots to
connect the card to the metal sheet. It was satisfying to visitors (both to
write and read), minimalist and elegant, economical and easy to maintain. The
board filled up fast; staff periodically edits the cards and places the index
cards it takes off the board in an open metal index box on the table so
visitors can leaf through the collection of cards if they want to.
