School of Geology and Geophysics and the Oklahoma Museum of Natural History
Assistant Professor/ Assistant Curator of Micropaleontology or Paleobotany

The University of Oklahoma announces a position starting July 1st, 1999, for an Assistant Curator of Micropaleontology or Paleobotany in the Oklahoma Museum of Natural History and Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in the School of Geology and Geophysics.  This is a full-time (12 month) joint appointment.  The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art facilities in the School of Geology and Geophysics housed in the Sarkeys Energy Center, and in the new Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, which is scheduled to be completed in March, 1999.

We seek a field-oriented, specimen-based paleontologist who uses surface or subsurface data from marine and/or terrestrial microfossils, or plant macrofossils, to address major problems in paleoecology, paleoclimatology, paleooceanography or stratigraphy.  The successful candidate will also demonstrate expertise in the core paleontological areas of systematics and biostratigraphy.  As a museum curator, responsibilities will include extensive scholarly research, and significant dedication to collection care, development and interpretation.  In addition to ensuring adequate care of the collections, the curator also assists in the interpretation of his/her discipline to the public.  He/she will work with the museumıs exhibits and education staff to design displays and to provide public programs and instructional aids.  Duties as a faculty member in the School of Geology and Geophysics include the development of a vigorous program of research and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate

The successful candidate should show strong research potential as demonstrated by a record of publication and presentations at conferences.  He/she will also demonstrate success, or potential for success, in gaining external research funding.  Excellent communication skills, both in public speaking and in university teaching, are required; experience in display work, public programming or related activities will be an asset.  Candidates should have prior experience in collection care and management, as demonstrated by work with repository collections, assembly of collections or use of collections.

Salary will be commensurate with experience. Candidates should have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. at the time of application; post-doctoral experience will be an asset.

Assistant/Associate Professor of Anthropology

The Oklahoma Museum of Natural History and Department of Anthropology at the University of Oklahoma, seek an individual with a commitment to developing the ethnological component of the museum and building a museum anthropology program within the Department of Anthropology.  It is a joint 12 month tenured (or tenure track) position to begin July 1, 1999.  A new state-of-the-art facility for the museum is nearing completion, which will provide spaces for research, collection storage, exhibits, and public programs.  The emphasis of the museumıs ethnological collection is North America, specifically the Southern Plains; however, outside the Plains area, the collection has Southwestern baskets and ceramics.  In addition, other fine collections exist from Central and South America, as well as bronzes and ceramics from China and Japan.  Rank and salary are commensurate with experience.  Requirements:  Ph.D. in sociocultural anthropology, experience with collections, research and publications commensurate with rank, and specialization in the ethnology of native North America.  An ability to complement the existing theoretical and topical strengths of the anthropology program is expected, as well as a commitment to obtain external funding for collection curation and research; willingness to assume responsibility in the area of exhibits and collection expansion; an engagement with current theoretical issues in sociocultural anthropology; and experience working with Native American communities.
