Position opening: Laboratory Coordinator
General Description
The Lubbock Lake Landmark, Museum of Texas Tech University, seeks a
Laboratory Coordinator. The Laboratory Coordinator reports directly
to the Laboratory Supervisor. Duties include all phases of artifact
processing including cleaning, identification, cataloging,
computerization, packaging, housing and inventory; training and
supervising laboratory staff (0-10); developing policies and
procedures; and other duties as assigned.

Full-time, temporary position (minimum 4 month, maximum 4 year
position). Includes a generous benefits package. May be expected to
work hours other than 8-5 Monday to Friday, or have weekends other
than Saturday and Sunday. Earliest start date September 2002

Scope of Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include supervising and participating in the
processing of archaeological objects, samples, and documents through
various methods such as water screening sediments to remove objects,
cleaning objects with distilled water, using preservatives and
chemicals, completing catalog records, labeling objects, packaging
objects, bar coding; and entering data into a computer. Candidate
must be able to organize collections data and people; prioritize
collection and laboratory activities; and budget and plan for
supplies and equipment.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise laboratory employees and volunteers.

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Must have understanding and ability to learn data management software
(currently FileMaker Pro), including bar coding
Ability to work well with others. Position involves working with
employees and volunteers of various experience levels, as well as
interacting with field crew personnel
Ability to do precise work

Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience
Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred: museum
science/studies, archaeology, anthropology, history, biology or
related fields.
Must have some experience in osteology or lithics and experience in
laboratory procedures.
Preferred to have experience in archaeological field work and
familiarity with stratigraphic excavation procedures.
