EXHIBIT RESEARCHER
Lewis and Clark Exhibit
Missouri Historical Society
MAY, 2001

This full-time, temporary staff member will assist in organization and
conceptual development of a major, nationally traveling exhibit on Lewis
and Clark, to open in 2004.  This is a grant-funded position.  Duties
include:

Research
Perform historical research on a wide variety of topics, including use
of sources such as Lewis and Clark journals, anthropological literature,
and cultural history sources; perform research into specific aspects of
Native American, military, scientific, medical, and fur trade material
and intellectual culture; check citations; locate and document artifacts
and graphic images

Writing
Prepare organized and comprehensively documented research reports;
assist in preparation of grant proposals and planning documents; write
publishable artifact labels and articles

Exhibition planning
Assist in conceptual development of an exhibition script; gather
information on visual and artifactual resources; maintain and update a
research database and files

Correspondence
Answer queries for information; make and maintain contact with museums,
archives, and private collectors; carry on routine correspondence with
consultants and advisors

Interviews
Consult with Native American individuals and groups on exhibition
content (will require travel); interview specialists in fields of art,
botany, zoology, military history, history of science, anthropology,
etc., for needed information

REQUIREMENTS: MA in anthropology or history, specializing in Native
Americans or American Frontier; ability to perform fast, thorough,
accurate, and annotated research; ability to summarize research in
writing; ability to communicate clearly and represent the institution
well both orally and in writing; computer skills (database, spreadsheet,
and word processing); accuracy; experience communicating with Native
American groups and scholars; knowledge of material culture;
imagination, curiosity, and creativity; type-A work ethic.
