When I faced a newly restored historic building (in a different position) we went with picture rail molding. One of the lumber firms in the Willamette valley of Oregon was my source - the only source I found at that time for wooden picture rail molding. We used it in conjunction with Walker Display's rod system which made it very easy to work with. Anything less I would think would lead to grief.
