Andy,

May I suggest contacting the Chicago Conservation Center (Iola Gardner), the
American Institute for Conservation, or even a university or institution with
a Textiles conservation department, to contact a textile professional and
ensure you proceed appropriately?  You can always pay a small fee for a
conservator to come and evaluate the items and write up a treatment plan, which you may
accept or reject.  Many texts on this subject are outdated or arguable at the
least, so be sure you contact people skilled in this area.
