Dear Meg: Photographer Bill Gaskins recently lectured at The Nelson-Atkins
Museum of Art on his writings and art, including his book project "Good and
Bad Hair," which is currently on exhibition at the Society for Contemporary
Photography in Kansas City (e-mail: [log in to unmask]) "Good and Bad Hair"
was published by Rutgers University Press, 1997.

Bill Gaskins can be reached through the Department of Art and Art History
at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, (816) 235-1501.

You might also try contacting Helen Shoemaker, a Ph.D. student in the
American Studies department at the University of Kansas, who is writing her
dissertation on hairstyles. Sorry I don't have her contact info., but I
will try forwarding your message to her through the grapevine.

Good luck!
James Martin

> The Outagamie Museum is developing an exhibit about hairstyles in the
> United States during the 20th century. The basic concept is that styles
> are a means of self-expression (e.g. conformity, rebellion, independence,
> sophistication, etc.), and that various events and influences have
changed
> the way that we have expressed certain messages. We intend for this
> exhibit to be fun and light-hearted, but grounded in solid information.
