I just got in on this discussion, so sorry if I'm repeating anything anyone has said. We did a huge installation by an artist from Maine who used actual hay and we had it fumigated (bombed in a sealed truck) and then we sprayed fire retardant on it once it was installed. The installation was enormous, comprised of 2 large (16 foot diameter) discs (he wove the hay) and some wall pieces. We had no problems with insects in the 12-week run and believe me, we would not have done it otherwise. The fumigating the bales in the truck did the bug trick, I'd say.
