Greetings From the Southwest Museum of Engineering, Communications and Computation in Glendale Arizona!!
For a cheap supply of lights make friends with a demolition company.
Here in Arizona they just scrapped valley west mall ( Manistee center). I was fortunate that the demo king of the project was a friend of our engineering museum!
The raiding was intense!
We netted van loads of material for building display cases, lights, wire conduit and....
just had to stop by the blue print room in the mall.....
just as water was seeping in.... just as metal pieces were coming through the roof tiles.....
Yes I got all the blue prints for the orig. layout of the mall as well as the several following renovations that happened over the years!
( tomb raiding is awesome!)
The blue prints have been offered to the local historical society to archive ( in trade for a few manikins we desperately need to sit behind and operate some telephone switchboards, but they seem to have them all in use....
soooo... still need some manikins ( local ones!)
Heh Heh! now that I have all of these great building materials, wire and fixtures I need to spend next week converting the raw materials into more display cases and applied lighting scenarios!

Janice,
Thanks, this community center is moving forward and committed to shedding bad management habits. I am encouraging them in that process and will definitely make the NEH Preservation Access grant a part of their development process.

While I am always an advocate of doing it inexpensively if possible, gallery lighting (or at least a consultant) is one of those things that might be fundable under an NEH Preservation Access grant. These provide funding for surveys, training and a small amount (up to $2000) of materials for upgrading collections care.

This query is directed to museum and gallery prep installers/designers or anyone that can give suggestions. I am helping a small community gallery to upgrade its space so that it will attract exhibitions by professional artists. The present lighting has old fluorescent lights and some antiquated track lighting. Roplex wires run up gallery walls. Their budget is very low so they cannot afford the services of a designer. I am suggesting that they take out the old lighting, rewire and install new wiring (hiding it) in the walls. They will re-drywall and paint the walls as well. I anticipate that many of their shows will consist of 2 dimensional works, many on paper including photography. Sculpture and installations will probably be a part of exhibitions next year. Right now, I need a suggestion for appropriate lighting, something inexpensive please.
Thanks,
Lizzetta
