250th Anniversary: Astronomy Helps Create Mason-Dixon Line
On this date 250 years ago (1767October 18), astronomers Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon completed surveyingmost of the southern boundary of Pennsylvania,what became the most famous boundary in U.S. history: the Mason-DixonLine. Local Native Americansprevented the survey of the last 23 miles of the boundary line.Philadelphia clock-maker and astronomer David Rittenhouse headed asurvey team which finished surveying those last 23 miles in 1784.
