I'd just like to go off on a tangent in response to what Gene Dillenburg
wrote: all of you hiring officials out there. . .

I would urge you not to make assumptions about the motives of candidates in
applying for your jobs, nor should you try to get into their heads about
what they "will" and "will not" accept at your place, should they come to
work for you.

People are motivated by all kinds of things, and they apply for jobs
(generally) that appeal to them and offer them something that they either
like to learn or do more of. I interviewed for a job in South Dakota,
coming from Washington, DC. The director was not sure that I would accept
the job, if offered (who in their right mind would move from Washington to
South Dakota?). Bless him, he did offer it to me, and I took it--I was
looking to break into a "real" museum (after working in a fake one) and this
was the right job for me. Most rewarding 7 years of my career (some of you
old timers on the list have heard this from me before).

Take each candidate on their face--but check references. Do not make their
decisions for them.
