Just to add my two cents - if your mom collected sewing smalls - some are
valuable antiques. It's probably good to establish what is really in the
collection.

collection

Angela,

My condolences on the loss of your mother.

Have you completely discounted the idea of breaking up her collection?
Consider the following.

There are quilt museums who might be ecstatic to get needles and thimbles
for their displays . The same may be true for smaller institutions who have
are highlighting needlework or looking at how families coped during wartime
(i.e. darning socks to save resources). Local needlework guilds might be
interested in a few pieces for displays or educational programs. Consider
farm or agricultural museums and historical societies who have turned
country stores into living history displays. You could check with
libraries to see if they showcase objects with their local history archives
or teachers who could use a few pieces to highlight their lessons in
history, home economics or art classes. If they are not too vintage,
perhaps a local nursing home or children's hospital could use the craft
tools. And don't forget that there may be friends and family members who
might like a few pieces that bring fond memories of spending time with your
mother.

It will take much more time and effort, but your mother's collection could
benefit so many different people.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Need help finding a home for a loved one's collection

Hello all,

I hope someone can help point me in the right direction on this issue - my
mother recently passed away unexpectedly and among her possessions is a
large collection of vintage and antique knitting/sewing/craft tools and
implements (darning eggs, crochet hooks, thimbles, needles, knitting
knobbies, much much more). There are at least 4 large curio cabinets filled
to the brim with these things - hundreds and perhaps thousands of items.

She left no instructions as to how to dispose of the collection. We don't
know the monetary value of the collection, although to her it was priceless.
My family would like for the collection to stay together, if possible, and
find a home for it either with a collector who will love the pieces as she
loved them or in a museum, historical society, or some other kind of
institution where they'll be cared for.

So, what should our first steps be? Does anyone know of a place where these
things could find a home?

Many thanks,

Angela Andres
