DRIVING: Parking garage next to the IntrepidThe Intrepid Museum is a unique
educational resource dedicated to the sea, air and space sciences, including
their history and future potential, with a particular emphasis on their role
in promoting our nation's defense.

The USS Intrepid is an aircraft carrier that was active through World War II
and the Vietnam War.  In between, it was a prime recovery vehicle for NASA,
picking up both Mercury and Gemini capsules.  The naval destroyer USS Edson
is thoroughly restored, with guided tours through massive engine rooms and
the navigation bridge. The USS GROWLER is the only intact strategic missile
submarine open to the public anywhere in the world. The GROWLER offers
Museum visitors a firsthand look at life aboard a submarine and a close-up
inspection of the once "top-secret" missile command center.  The extensive
aircraft collection ranges from wood flying machines to the worlds fastest
spy plane.

We will visit three new exhibitions created by the Museum. The first, called
"Defending Our Future," is an interactive kiosk display which highlights all
the latest combat technologies including aircraft, aircraft carriers,
submarines, and land combat systems. Mission Control has ten interactive
kiosks to help explore public fascination with space and Prepare to Dive
celebrates the 100th anniversary of the submarine.

The Museums Council of New York City was founded sixty years ago.  There are
now 98 member institutions, virtually all of the City's not for profit
museums.  We meet several times each year at museums large and small to get
an insiders view of the museums' work, and to build a sense of community
among the City's museums.  Participation in meetings is open to all levels
of staff and Board, as well as people who work in industries such as
exhibition design, not for profit services, etc.
