Position Summary

The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum (TSHM) is a division of the State Preservation Board (SPB), the state agency responsible for preserving and maintaining the state's historic Capitol and its grounds.  SPB's governing board is comprised of the Governor, Lt. Governor, Speaker of the House, a Senate member, a House of Representatives member and a citizen member.  TSHM is a dynamic non-collecting educational institution that engages its visitors in the exciting Story of Texas through a variety of programs and exhibit experiences. TSHM is also a very popular tourist destination drawing visitors from not only Texas, but all over the world. The Museum Director reports to the Executive Director of the State Preservation Board (SPB).  The Museum's annual operating budget of approximately $5,000,000 is derived from earned and developed revenues. This position requires an experienced professional to direct and supervise museum operations and programs to include: exhibit planning; budgeting; marketing; education programs; visitor services; theaters; Café; membership and development. The Director provides leadership through specialized knowledge of the museum field and is responsible for all aspects of museum policy, planning, management, and day-to-day operations.

 

Performs all other related duties as assigned. *Work hours are based on the Museum's 360 day-per-year schedule and may include weekends, evenings and/or holidays, including on short notice. 

 

Essential Functions

 

Develop policies and utilize professional practices which support the Museum's mission and goals; implement Museum policy within the framework of overall SPB mission and policy.

Ensure the development and implementation of appropriate long and short range plans to achieve organizational goals in:  Finance,  Administration, Marketing, Public Relations, Development, Membership, Programming, Exhibits, and Facility Operations. 

Oversee the financial self-sufficiency of the Museum through effective financial planning; evaluation and implementation of entrepreneurial strategies, and development activities.

Establishes and maintains excellent relationships with the Museum's Foundation Board and its Executive Director.   The Texas State History Museum Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation whose mission is to provide funding and community support for the Museum.

Oversee the intellectual and programmatic direction of the Museum, including exhibition and education program development.

Directs the Museum's human resources management strategy, including staffing (approximately 70 FTEs), staff development, performance management, employee retention and employee relations. Administers and adheres to all SPB Human Resources Policies.

Coordinate Museum resources with other Agency divisions as appropriate and necessary for efficient and cost-effective Museum operations.

Look for opportunities to collaborate with Museums and other statewide entities in programmatic, information and resource sharing initiatives.

Ensure the development of strong community relations and implement effective methods for attracting diverse Museum audiences.

Communicate the Museum vision and goals to the general public, public and private funding sources, and governmental entities.

Displays effective interpersonal and presentation skills in communicating with others, including in public speaking engagements and when providing legislative testimony.

Regular attendance is an essential job function for all SPB positions.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate for this position will be a graduate from an accredited college or university with a Masters Degree in History, Museum Science, Public Administration or a related discipline with progressively responsible leadership experience in a museum, or career background in the non-profit, for-profit or public sector, including advanced financial and human resources management responsibilities. Applicant's background must reflect experience working with diverse groups of people and the wider community.  Ten (10) years of senior management experience is required, including complex budget management and revenue analysis. Requires brand management, marketing, merchandising, media and/or consumer promotion program experience.  Established  Museum industry relationships in Texas and throughout the United States are required. Public speaking and presentation skills are required in addition to experience in business development, strategic management and long-range planning. All applicants are required to demonstrate advanced knowledge of technology use in museums and to be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite products, including databases and spreadsheet applications in a Windows environment. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. and fifteen years of progressively responsible museum administrative and management experience.  Experience working with Texas historical collections, resources, agencies and programs. Has a demonstrated leadership role in the museum community with established and ongoing collaborative relationships.  Entrepreneurial attitude; conceptual planning capabilities, organization and team management skills. Familiarity with Texas state agency governance structures.
