Some museums use commercial products because they receive them for free as a sponsorship. I've seen this in a previous place I worked.

I don't like Meguiars because it is used by 'car guys' who take their cars out on the road on a regular basis. The product when they use it, therefore, doesn't stay on forever because the car will be out in the wind, rain, etc. There's a differing mentality between 'car guys' and 'museum people': they normally don't think twice about repainting/making a new part/etc. because that's what they have to do to keep their car running and looking good.

I don't mean to sound so general. This is just my experience with the many 'car guys' on our board and in our museum's general sphere. I have board members and volunteers who swear by Meguiar's, but I don't think they understand the real issue at hand. Meguiar's products are meant to be used on cars that are drivers.

I like going to The Henry Ford for conservation tips on our cars: http://www.thehenryford.org/research/caring.aspx

Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] Query about Cleaning Cars

Museum conservators usually use commercial products for cleaning - though I'm sure some car museums that are not up to the museum standards of the Peterson or the Henry Ford - Greenfield Village, may have be using products like this.

My question is always: "What do you want to clean?" - is it dust? oily grime? oils from hands? or something else?

Cheers!
Dave

A friend of mine has been asked to use something called "Meguiar's" Quick Detailer Mist and Wipe product on some automobiles to go on exhibit. He is understandably cautious despite the manufacturer's claim that the stuff is used in museums. Anyone here have any experience with it, know anything about it? I will pass answers on to him.
Many thanks,
