Adding on here to the advice you've already received:

In the future, another option you can try that we've had great luck with is to put painters tape on the wall where the label will go and then attach the label to the painters tape with double-sided tape. When it's time to take the labels off, they come right down, no damage to the paint. The painters tape has just enough adhesive properties to make this work. This will only work if the labels are small and lightweight.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Removing adhesive from walls without taking off paint

Hello -
A colleague has a problem that I'm hoping someone might have a solution for:

Artists installed a photo exhibit in the building's lobby - they were told no nails or adhesives. When my coworker had to remove them, he discovered that "they have adhered Velcro to the walls of the lobby, and when I try to carefully remove the Velcro, it takes the paint with it (as I suspected it would - the reason I told the exhibitors "no adhesive" in the first place).
So my question to you is: do you know of any way to safely remove Velcro from a painted wall without damaging the paint? I have considered such things as "goo-gone" type solvents; or perhaps an iron might soften the adhesive to allow easier removal. But I suspect goo-gone would leave a petroleum or other stain, even if successfully removing the Velcro strip. And I am concerned that applying heat with an iron may only set the adhesive even stronger, rather than less. Have you had experience in resolving issues like this?"

Thanks for any help you can offer!
Carey
