In my experience, successes, failures, and observations, I would offer
these three things as important for young people in museums.

1. Learn, right away, how to speak persuasively and in front of a large
group. Be able to convey passion, inspire others, and create an
environment whereby listeners begin to motivate themselves. (This, because
I have never believed one can motivate another...only inspire.) No amount
of learning and retained knowledge will make up for a mumbled speech. The
content may be great but, like museums, we should also consider the delivery.

2. Develop empathy. Not the PC, made-for-TV, media-driven kind, but true
empathy for others. This will drive decisions and reactions not only on
planning museum truths, but provide direction for life.

3. Live your life like you're almost finished with it. We love and work
in museums...we do not belong there...stuffed in a case. Grow your
perspective on life and give your museum career the best effort it
deserves, but not at the expense of greater things, family, love. And,
remember to laugh...mostly at yourself.
