If you are looking for software in terms of having the material live on-line, consider omeka at:

I have heard good things about this new product, and it's free.

I am a volunteer at the Plainfield Historical Society in Plainfield, NH. We are trying to digitize our collections so that visitors can search the collection from the Historical Societies website. The majority of the collection is archival material which I plan to scan. This is a volunteer run historical society with a very limited budget. What software do you recommend??
Thanks
