My spouse is from Bytom, a small town outside of Krakow and we go there often. Definitely go through Wawel Castle and the crypt under the church there. There are many spots where Pope John Paul lived and worked while he was in Krakow that are also worth visiting. You can also go into the area where Copernicus studied while at the Jagellonian University in Krakow. I also suggest a visit to any of the castle ruins located in the immediate vicinity. They are breathtaking and really re-emphasis the new-ness of America in contrast with Europe. The modern art museum, away from the old downtown section, is also definitely worth a visit.

In terms of restaurants, they are all relatively cheap because the dollar is so strong. There is a wonderful restaurant in the main hotel on the square in the center of the city, also a smaller restaurant, the name is loosely translated "Under Angels" in English, is wonderful.

Have a wonderful trip.

Hello everyone,
I ask for any travel suggestions from those who have been to or are familiar
with Krakwow, Poland. There is so much in terms of the guidebooks, but I
will only be able to stay for a week (leaving Dec. 13/00).
Especially, ideas for the museums (any specific areas within them?) - I am
interested in art and early music and history. Also, I will be traveling on
a shoestring and so any inexpensive/good restaurants?
Best wishes, sorry to bother at this busy time of year - I very much enjoy
reading posts to this list!
Lois Travis
