At the Indianapolis Art Center the departments of Education (studio classes
and public programs or activities not directly related to exhibitions, such
as trips, films, concerts, etc.), Exhibitions (gallery exhibitions and their
associated educational programs and administration, including registration
and any issues of caring for the environment and the objects) and Outreach
(off-site programs and programs for special audiences) all report to the
Associate Director for Programs. (we have no collections) Programs in this
context is distinct from Operations, which are the departments of Finance,
Marketing, Development, Special Events and Administration who all report to
the Executive Director.

We find this quite successful, since Operations covers all programs equally
and although all programs are interdependent, sometimes the Outreach
function takes precedence and sometimes it is another programmatic area.
Any of the programmatic departments can initiate a project, depending upon
its goal, and everyone has a hand in making it a success.

Subject: Interpretation and Programs

Dear Colleagues -- Who among you are in museums where curatorial,
registration and education staff are together in a department or division
that reports to you or to someone else because you are responsible for
education and interpretation, public programs as well as overseeing the
exhibition process. What is that department or division called (eg.
Education and Programs; Exhibitions and Programs; Collections and Programs;
Education and Interpretation, etc.) What is your position title, and is
this structure successful?
