The College of Communication and Information at Kent State University offers an interdisciplinary Ph.D. that allows students to tailor a program according to their areas of interest and expertise. The curriculum builds on the strengths of the college's four schools: Library and Information Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, Communication Studies, and Visual Communication Design. No other doctoral program offers the same breadth and depth of study.
Museum studies is concerned with the history, systems, use, functions, and impact of museums and musealized contexts. It uses the dynamic relationships between theory, practice, and experience to investigate issues and concepts related to the meaning and value of cultural heritage institutions, objects and collections, preservation, interpretation, and user interactions.
For this Ph.D. specialization, students can pursue an overall museology (museum studies theory) approach or further specific lines of inquiry within museum studies, focusing on users, system, communication, or collections.
The Doctor of Philosophy degree is research-oriented. The goal of the Ph.D. program in Communication and Information is to develop doctoral scholars' ability to generate knowledge by conducting and publishing research in their areas of expertise.
