Caren;

Program evaluators typically price themselves by the day, and can command
anything up to $US1500 per diem (a senior partner in a big-name
multinational firm, such as Price Waterhouse) About the minimum you can
expect to pay for any kind of quality evaluator is $US300-400 a day. $US700
a week? I wonder what quality that might buy. If you can get someone good,
who is willing to do it for that price, go for it!!! But beware of people
talking about "program evaluation" when they mean nothing of the kind. A lot
of bad research is carried out in the name of program evaluation.

I will be giving a one-day workshop at ALHFAM in June at Mystic Seaport, on
"Tools and Techniques for Evaluating YOUR Live Interpretation Program". In
it, I will argue strongly for applying the program evaluation approach to
programs of this kind and will introduce people to the basics of program
evaluation. I also offer one and two day workshops to help institutions get
into program evaluation (see attached).

Contact me off-line if you are interested in the name of one of the finest
program evaluators in the world - who happens to be based in DC!!!
Unfortunately, she is at or near the top of the price range I quoted.
Remember, though, that the big firms assemble teams composed of evaluators
at various levels for any project, which helps to keep the price rather more
reasonable. Such a team carried out the evaluation of the Children's Museum
of the Canadian Museum of Civilization eight years ago for approximately
$US65,000 (1992 dollars), so program evaluation is NOT cheap.

Sometimes this imposes a danger - of an unscrupulous firm having a big name
who is there for the start and close of the project and leaves everything in
between to very low level people. However, that's not Nancy's way.

I am delighted that you are interested in applying program evaluation in
your institution. Would that more heritage institutions were! It's been my
specialty, among the hundred odd studies I have conducted over the years and
institutions that ignore it are in danger of making critical programming
decisions on information that is grossly inadequate.
