CURATOR

JOHN AND PEGGY MAXIMUS GALLERY


The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History seeks applicants for the
position of Curator of its John and Peggy Maximus Gallery of Antique Natural
History Art (Gallery Curator).  The Maximus Gallery is dedicated to the
preservation, interpretation and display of natural history illustrations on
paper or fabric (including prints and drawings, excluding photographs) that
are at least 100 years old.  The Gallery functions as a department within
the Museum's Division of Collections and Research.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the curation of the
Gallery's collections, the conception of its exhibitions, the development
and coordination of its public programs, the supervision of its staff and
other related tasks deemed necessary by the Director of Collections and
Research.  Included in these responsibilities will be to:

Responsibilities

·     Ensure the highest level of care and professional management of the
museum's growing collection of antique natural history illustrations
·     Conduct scholarly research using this collection and on related
subjects
·     Work with collectors, donors, and supporters to develop and expand
the collection
·     Plan, develop and write three exhibitions annually, drawing from the
collection or employing related art and subjects from other institutions or
collectors
·     Supervise Gallery staff and volunteers as well as formulate and
administer a budget
·     Promote understanding and appreciation of antique natural history
art among the public 
·     Promote support for the Gallery among the general audience and
specific affinity groups
·     Network with other institutions, museums, galleries and libraries.
Be aware of other exhibitions, holdings and collections held publicly,
particularly sources for loans or transfer acquisitions

Qualifications

·     Preferred candidate will hold a doctorate in Fine Arts, Art History
or a related field.  However applicants with Master's degrees and
significant commensurate experience will also be considered.
·     Minimum of five years of experience in art curation in a museum or
public art gallery
·     Knowledge of conservation issues relating to works on paper and
proficiency in the correct handling and housing of fragile images
·     Specific expertise with printed zoological and botanical
illustrations and an understanding of their role in the history of western
European and American natural science is highly desirable.
·     Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential 
·     Experience in the planning and design of mounted exhibits and their
label text  
·     Experience working closely with donors and supporters to develop the
gallery and expand the collection


The Gallery Curator position is full-time, exempt and eligible for the
Museum's benefit package including vacation, sick leave, health and vision
care, and a 403b retirement plan.  As a member of the Collections and
Research Division the Gallery Curator reports directly to the Director of
Collections and Research.
