Job Description

Position:  Exhibit Designer

General Description:  Responsible for design and installation of the
museum's changing exhibits, including flat shows of antique natural history
art in the John and Peggy Maximus Gallery and three-dimensional shows on
anthropological and natural science subjects in the museum's Changing
Gallery.

Terms:  This is a full-time position of 40 hours per week.

Reports to:  Director of Exhibits (in consultation with the Curator of the
Maximus Gallery)

Specific Responsibilities:
*       Develop a unified design signature and feel for all exhibits at the
Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, yet ensure diversity and creativity
in each show
*       Within the unified design, maintain a distinctive and sophisticated
quality for shows in the Maximus Gallery for antique natural history art
*       Design, and assist in fabrication and installation, of exhibits of
antique natural history art as well as of anthropological and natural
history subjects
*       Responsible for conceptual and final design, including exhibit
lay-out, color coordination, lighting, graphic design of labels and text
panels, other graphic and photographic displays, banners, and printed
materials related to the exhibits
*       Prepare presentation materials for fundraising purposes
*       Work with Director of Exhibits to develop and track budget for each
exhibit, select and monitor vendors, suppliers, and contractors
*       Work closely with Director of Exhibits, curators, and other team
members to ensure on-time and on-budget installation of high-quality
exhibits
*       Ensure utmost sensitivity and respect for artwork, artifacts, and
specimens and responsibility toward lenders

Requirements:
*       Demonstrated experience in designing and mounting exhibits in a
gallery or museum setting or related environments
*       Basic knowledge of conservation issues, particularly relating to
antique works on paper, and of current conservation practice
*       Sensitivity to, and respect for, works of art, cultural artifacts,
and natural history specimens
*       Formal training in industrial or graphic design or related field
preferred
*       Good drawing and drafting skills
*       Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and PageMaker
*       Committed to the visitor; good team player; attention to detail

Physical demand:
*       Normal office environment
*       Occasional lifting of light to moderately heavy loads
*       Occasional climbing of ladders
*       Requires good vision (acuity, good depth perception, color vision)
