This week-long course is designed to introduce 4th - 12th grade educators to
innovative ways in which the arts can be used as a means for understanding
New York City’s history.  To commemorate the consolidation of the five
boroughs into Greater New York 100 years ago, historians, artists,
journalists and authors, folklorists, photographers, and museum educators
will present workshops that encourage a more holistic approach to the study
of history and the arts.

The political, economic, and social issues at the heart of the creation of
Greater New York a century ago still resonate in the lives of its citizens.
Discussions will focus on issues being considered in turn-of-the-century New
York: politics and economics; immigration and ethnicity; transportation;
infrastructure and the built environment; competition and empowerment.  By
engaging in arts activities, participants will examine the implications of
these concerns for contemporary society.  Educators will leave the institute
with a deeper understanding of how to incorporate various arts experiences
into the curriculum, including drama, creative writing, fine arts,
documentary photography, folklore, and artifact/artwork interpretation.

register for non-credit, NYC Board of Education New Teacher credit or

For one Teachers College, Columbia University credits, participants must
register for TG4805B (CRN#: 22476), pay Teachers College tuition, and
