Preservation Virginia's Cape Henry Lighthouse

 

Position Summary

 

            Under the guidance of the Director of Preservation Services and
in coordination with the Associate Director of Museum operations, the Site
Coordinator is responsible for the administration of the site and staff,
preservation of the structures and grounds, interpretation of the entire
site, promotion of the site in the community, and successful performance of
the museum store.

 

            This is a full-time year round position that will require
weekend work.  It also requires supervision of the interpretive staff on
site, including hiring and firing decisions, close coordination with
statewide staff in the Richmond office, operation of a wide range of
electronic communication and data collection, and coordination with the
military surrounding the site.

 

Duties of the position include:

 

.         Monitoring the historic structure as well as all support
structures on the property. This includes attending to the appearance of the
grounds, stairs, walls, etc. and notifying the Director of Preservation
Services of any maintenance needs of the site.

 

.         Following all of the procedures and policies of  Preservation
Virginia including those for maintenance, preservation, care of collections,
care of live animals, disaster preparedness, filming, facilities use etc.

 

.         Ensuring proper and accurate interpretation at the property by
recruiting and selecting, training, evaluating, and monitoring interpretive
staff.  All staff, including those with primary duty in the Museum Store are
considered interpretive staff and must be fully knowledgeable of the history
and significance of the site.

 

.         Scheduling and supervising the interpretive staff (paid or
volunteer).

 

.         Coordinating customer service training for all staff

 

.         Performing annual evaluations of interpretive staff

 

.         Ensuring compliance with the Employee Manual and that employee
records are current and complete and have been forwarded to the Finance
Office

 

.         Ensuring compliance with financial and accounting policies at Cape
Henry to ensure adequate security and control of monetary and inventory
assets maintained at the site  to prevent loss, theft or misuse of those
assets.

 

.         Promoting and ensuring promotion by interpretive staff of
membership and gift card programs to reach the stated goals of the site. 

 

.         Preparing weekly and monthly reports concerning number of
visitors, ticket sales, gift shop receipts, and other income generated by
the property, using Excel template worksheets and e-mail communications from
the site and according to the schedule set by the Finance Office.

 

.         Managing site operations to ensure budgeted goals for expenses, as
well as admissions and retail sales are achieved annually.

 

.         Work with the Finance Office, or designated Inventory Manager, to
order retail merchandise and as a resource for product mix to improve retail
sales and maintain reasonable inventory levels. 

 

.         Acting as liaison with related organizations in the region,
including the military, the City of Virginia Beach, tourism organizations,
historical and cultural attractions, etc..

 

.         Attend training and informational meetings in the Richmond office
or at such locations as may be determined.  This includes participating by
conference call in regular staff meetings as scheduled. 

 

.         Performing other duties as required by the position or as assigned
by the supervisor.

Position requires significant outside work in both hot and cold weather,
requires energy and physical stamina, ability to walk and climb substantial
quantity of stairs and ability to lift 50 pounds. Position is full time,
salaried with benifits and does require working weekends. A valid ID is
required to gain access to the active Fort Story Base in Virginia Beach.
