It appears that this did not post the first time. If it did, I apologize
for the re-post!

Matt,

It sounds like you were an unfortunate victim of timing, purchasing H8
loggers at the end of their lifetime. The H8 logger was in use for more
than a decade. I personally have been using them with client museums for 15
years or so. They represented the best combination of value and accuracy
available on the market. Yes, they can not be calibrated. However, for
less than the cost that other manufacturers charge for re-calibration or a
new sensor, you could buy a new H8! The upgraded U-series is even better,
with 8x the memory for less cost (for the U10, now $69). I, too, have an
old H8 shuttle that is useless, as well as the old software and old loggers.
But the new U10 logger and software (which is significantly upgraded, in my
opinion) is certainly a great value for someone who is just starting out.
For the cost of one PEM2, approximately 5 U10 loggers can be purchased. The
one-time cost of $99 for software is minimal. Yes, I agree that buying all
of the shuttles and optical shuttles for exterior loggers can be a bit
expensive (but still less than 1 PEM logger), but the per-logger costs
quickly even the playing field. I know of many institutions that have only
$500 or so for a monitoring program, and they can actually set one up with
HOBO loggers, but not with the PEM system. If you have the money, go high
end, but if you want bang for the buck, it's hard to beat the HOBO U10.
