Here are some updates for the SPNHC meeting in Rapid City. The website for this meeting is located at http://cfrspnhc2013.com/index.html.

Registration
We've extended the early bird rates! Registration for the meeting continues at https://foundation.sdsmt.edu/sdsmt---foundation/ways-to-give/SPNHC-registration . Detailed registration information is found at http://cfrspnhc2013.com/registration-information.html. You will be able to register at extended early bird rates through the 31st. If you have problems registering, please let us know. After May 31st, rates will go up. Vendor and advertising information will be sent out separately.

Presentations
We are continuing to accept poster and paper abstracts through May 31st. Please indicate in your abstract if your paper is for a general session or one of the specialty sessions (iDigBio, Demo Camp, repositories and partnerships, or in situ conservation).

Oral presentations are 20 minutes in length and will be moderated. A computer-projector setup will be available in all rooms. We ask that you send your presentation in advance, via email if at all possible, so that we can have the program loaded and ready to go each day. If you have any questions or concerns about your presentation, please let us know. All talks will be held in the Classroom Building, which has full AV and computer-feed support.

Poster dimensions are 36" (91.4 cm) wide by 24" (61 cm) high, maximum. The display boards will be provided here, so you don't need to send or bring any collapsible set-ups. We will have poster set-up on Tuesday afternoon in the Surbeck Center. If it is possible, we ask that you have an author with the poster during breaks on Wednesday and Thursday to answer questions. Poster take-down will be on Friday.

Lodging
The block of rooms at lower rates at the Best Western Ramkota has been booked. Rooms are still available at a slightly higher price. This week, options for staying in dorm rooms here on the SDSMT campus have opened up. Please use this contact information for details:

You may also want to check with the Hotel Alex Johnson in the Rapid City downtown area, or any of a number of hotels on the Lacrosse Street complex.

Transportation will be provided to and from the Ramkota during the meeting. If you are not staying at the Ramkota and need transportation, please contact [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> and let us know where you are staying so that we can set up an efficient run. Parking on campus requires a valid visitor parking pass, which we will provide on request.

Field trips
Day trips on Monday will leave from the Ramkota. We will make a final decision on trips by May 31, based on registration. Remember that the northern Great Plains has lots of interesting weather possibilities. Don't forget sunscreen, a light rain jacket, extra water, and a camera. All trips will include box or catered lunches, snacks, and water, as well as expert guides and drivers. If you have mobility or accessibility needs that need to be taken into consideration, please advise the Local Committee.

Committee meetings
Committee meetings have been scheduled throughout the day on Tuesday, June 18. The detailed schedule will be up on the website soon. Lunch will be on your own. The meetings will take place in the Surbeck Center on the SDSM&T campus, which has a complete food service area downstairs. If you are a committee chair and have special AV or other needs, please let the Local Committee know. All rooms will have water service in the rooms, and a coffee break area will be set up for everyone.

SPNHC Council will meet on Thursday afternoon/evening after the sessions end.

Evening events

Tuesday, 6:00-8:00: Icebreaker at the Museum of Geology. An ice cream/sorbet sundae bar will be set up in the Museum. Join us for the unveiling of a new exhibit on the sabertooth cats of the Badlands, which will include a brief talk by the exhibit curator, Dr. Clint Boyd, on the significance of these fossils. We will also have the Paleontology Research Laboratory open for behind-the-scenes tours. The PRL is the Museum's dedicated collections facility and repository, and is the first state-owned LEED Gold facility in South Dakota.

Wednesday, 6:00-9:00: Vendors' reception at the Journey Museum. The Journey Museum is a partnership of four entities: the Museum of Geology, the State Archaeological Research Center, the Minnilusa Historical Society, and the Sioux Indian Museum. Heavy hors-d'oeuvres, a wine and beer selection, and tours of the Journey exhibits are all included.

Thursday night: Summer Nights in downtown Rapid City. Enjoy a relaxed evening in the historic downtown district. Summer Nights bring together local food, craft and music events every Thursday in this area. Take time to visit the newly opened Museum of the American Bison, developed in consultation with Lakota elders and other experts.

Friday night: SPNHC banquet on the SDSM&T campus. Your registration includes one banquet ticket; extras can be purchased at $50 each. Transportation will be provided to and from the Ramkota.

Saturday workshop
The Saturday workshop focuses on in situ conservation issues, and will be hosted by The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, Inc., one of the world's leading in situ preservation centers, showcasing the largest concentration of mammoths in a single site. Transportation, handouts, and lunch are all part of your registration.

Other issues
As always, please let us know ASAP about any personal concerns you may have about access, ADA accommodation, allergy, food preference, transportation, child care or other issues.
