Something we did occasionally at a small museum I worked for was to allow
board members to take a 'leave of absence' if they had some extended
committment that interfered with meeting attendance. This way, if they are
a valued board member, they are allowed to finish their term without
being 'kicked off' the board. I think there is a difference between simply
ditching board meetings with no reasonable notice, and having a conflicting
committment. I also second the idea that these things should be clearly
defined in the bylaws.
