Our units set off an alarm when taken out the front door (not at the courtyard door or emergency exits). Not sure whether this was programmed by the manufacturer or by our Technology department - I can put you in touch if you're interested, although the solution mentioned below seems much simpler and less susceptible.

In other museums, I've seen them hold a photo id for the duration of the tour at the return desk.
