Subject: [MUSEUM-L] Fwd: Re: [MUSEUM-L] Play Based Education Resources

Christian asked me to post his message below:

Dirk,

museums and similar institutions resp. their competent departments should generally restrain from giving recommendations for companies. In companies, policies and persons are changing quite fast and often, components of products are exchanged without notice just for higher profits etc. No company will proceed with products which do not sell. As we live in fast pacing times, no wonder that actually recommendations are given daily on companies which have "disappeared" since years. Our own database of European museum companies is probably full of them because there is no mandatory information flow, in these cases).

On the other hand, recommendations may be given to methods, treatments, "best practice" etc. - with caution and indications that much it is up to the inquirer's responsibility (as Martha had mentioned).

Even if a lot is been done in museums, their organizations and individuals to spread knowledge within the "trade", any critical visit of museums reveals that the spread of knowledge within the museum world takes time. At a given moment, not all museum professionals worldwide can refer to the same knowledge and experience.

For example, state of the art for framing valuable graphical artworks is a sensor within each museum frame collecting data on temperature, rh, lux, shocks and pressure producing alarms worldwide and reports in real time. Just check when it will be introduced to your collection... J

Best

Christian
