MEET KERRY CARLIN-MORGAN:

As an undergraduate, I was very confused about what I
wanted to do and had some sense of what it was but
could never quite but my finger on it.

During a volunteer experience as a zoo docent, I
discovered that I loved education in informal settings
(especially wildlife/natural history) and that at last
I had found the thing that I had been trying to
articulate for years but no one knew how to direct me
too. A woman at the zoo directed me to a professor at
the University of Florida who became my major
professor for my masters and doctoral degrees.

I have an undergraduate degree in biology/animal
science. My graduate degrees are in science education
with a wildlife ecology minor.

My dissertation topic was curiosity and learning on a
zoo field trip and I finished in 1999.

My major areas of interest are conservation/
environmental/ wildlife education. I also am very
interested in the evaluation and research of programs
and exhibits. I like to work on both education and
exhibition programs and believe they are integrally
tied.

I currently work in a small natural history museum
that has no exhibition space and very limited public
space. We are looking to remedy this situation but
progress is slow.

My major professor passed away in my last year of
graduate school. Without him, the transition to my
current position was more difficult. I have no one to
ask for advice and feedback on little things like
input into a project to big things like publishing and
career choices.

I work at a University Museum and am immersed in an
academic environment which I did not plan for (most
museums and zoos are not University affiliated). A
mentor need not be at a University Museum but it would
help sometimes.

I would like to be able to discuss education and
exhibition issues with someone else in a natural
history museum or zoo.
