One museum-related book I would recommend, though it is from the Natural History museum perspective rather than Art museum perspective would be Dry Storeroom No. 1: the Secret Life of the Natural History Museum by Richard Fortey.

For a fictional take on an art museum, you might consider The Bowl Is Already Broken: A Novel by Mary Kay Zuravleff.

Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] suggestions for a freshman common reader on art and museums?

Dear Colleagues,

We are in the process of making suggestions for the freshman common reader for incoming fall 2010 Ball State University students. Since it is our 75th anniversary, I wonder if you have any suggestions for paperback books providing a window into the world of art and museums that is written in an engaging manner. Maybe some of you have had well-received books in your museum book clubs?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

All the best,

Tania Said
