Micki,
You might want to consider sending your query also to the pest/IPM e-mail
discussion list to see what kind of answers it elicits. Information on how
to sign up for this list can be found at www.museumpests.net
<http://www.museumpests.net/> under the mailing list section. Currently
there is a bit of information on our group and goals but we hope by our next
working group meeting at the end of February, that there will be a lot of
other useful Integrated Pest Management information available there for the
museum community to access. Please bookmark the site and check back.
Best,

Subject: Eeeek- powder post beetles!
I am very interested in hearing from those of you who have treated powder
post beetle larval infestations. Mine are in varnished old fir flooring
within an historic log cabin. I have been doing a lot of research while
monitoring my growing little piles of fresh frass (say that quickly three
times). It sounds like the floorboards need to be stripped and drenched in
liquid Borasol, and hormone scent traps set out to capture any adults still
around.
Has anyone done this on their floors? How did you monitor penetration? How
long before the floors can be revarnished? Does treatment work in unheated
spaces? Will the application dry too quickly if I continue to run a
dehumidifier in the same space? The logs are fir also, will the adults run
for the logs to lay eggs while I am treating the floors?
You'll have plenty of time to reply while I run out and buy a big jug of
cheap red wine so better contemplate my next move.
