museums and libraries are my favorite places.

memorable moments...

1. John Deer Home in Grand Detour, Il.
        seeing the first steel plow for the first time - i guess the way the tour
guide described it and the connection that he made with the land (and since
i was into mud at the age of eight)  i could imagine the way that the dirt
would stick to the iron and how it would slide right off the steel one. i
guess it doesn't sound very impressive right now - but i was mesmerized by
that object. I was also impressed with the beauty of the shape of the blade.

2.  Museum of Science and Industry - Chicago, Il.
        i got lost at the age of four watching the model train go around and around
and around

3.  Museum of Fine Arts  - Houston
        Richard Diebenkorn at the age of 22 - understanding the formal issues of
abstract art (finally) and then also understanding simultaneously that it
was not about that.

4. (not a museum experience - but it was.. i think you know what i mean)
University of Houston  - Main Library - 5th floor - blue wing

Discovering Plato's republic and reading the Allegory of the Cave for the
first time - I was in the habit of walking through the stacks and pulling
off books to read a passage and putting them back on the shelf - I
discovered the allegory of the cave this way - of course when i told my
friends about this - they were not impressed because they had already taken
philosophy 101 - but i kept on thinking how they were robbed of the beauty
of the story because they did not discover it as i did (dont worry - the
experience was not diminished by the outside forces :) )

Oh yes, smelly exhibit, you can put your nose in a box and smell a Buffalo
(Bison) wallow at the North Dakota Heritage Center (Bismark, ND).  Y, I
don't know.
