The Schwenkfelder Library & Heritage Center, Pennsburg, Montgomery County,
PA is pleased to present "The ABCs of German American Education in PA Prior
to to Public School Movement of 1834," a symposium on education and literacy
among the German speaking settlers of southeastern PA prior to 1834. Topics
include German and English in the classroom, gender issues, curriculum and
schoolmasters.
Speakers for the day will be Dr. Elizabeth Lewis Pardoe "Little Books and
'the Book': Kinder lehre in 18th century PA";
Dr. George Boudreau on the comparison and contrast of education in the 18th
century Quaker/English community and the German community in PA; Joel
Alderfer on "Kommt Liebe kinder, Kommt Herbey: Education in the Mennonite
Communities of Southeastern PA to 1840"; Dr. Allen Viehmeyer on
Schwenkfelder Secular Education and Educational Tools between 1700 and 1834;
Charlene Donchez Mowers on Moravians and Education in the 18th Century; and
Michael Showalter on education at the Ephrata Cloister "A Door was
Opened...to work upon the Young People."
DATE & TIME: Saturday June 30, 2007 9:00 am to 3:30 pm
