The University of Alberta is seeking a Curator of Contemporary Art for the University of Alberta Art Collection (UAAC). The Curator, Contemporary Art, is a new position created to shape the vision for the contemporary art collection (1950 to the present), to creatively and cooperatively integrate the collection into the University's academic and community outreach programs, and to advance the University's vision "to inspire the human spirit through outstanding achievements in learning, discovery and citizenship in a creative community, building one of the world's great universities for the public good." The vision will include collection expansion for a renewed Campus Public Art Program and projects that mentor students and volunteers.
The University of Alberta Art Collection is one of 35 collections that comprise the University of Alberta Museums, an award-winning and leading model for teaching, research, discovery learning, and access in post-secondary institutions. The UAAC consists of more than 8500 objects and includes paintings, prints, drawings, and sculptures by Canadian and international artists, both historical and contemporary. The print collection is among the finest international contemporary collections in Canada, housed in the Print Study Centre, a model facility for discovery learning. Reporting to the Executive Director, Museums and Collections Services, the Curator, (Contemporary Art), is accountable for the research, development, collections management and program implementation of the Contemporary Art Collection and the Public Art Program within the UAAC. The Curator, (Contemporary Art) works as part of a curatorial team which includes the Curator (Historical Art Collection), and the Curator (Mactaggart Art Collection), and works collaboratively with the Museums and Collections Services Management Team.
Major areas of responsibility include:
* Collection development and rationalization including new acquisitions and deaccessions
* Independent research resulting in exhibitions, publications, web-based projects/databases and targeted public programs
* Ensuring physical and intellectual access to the Collection and the Public Art Program
* Fund and resource development related to the Collection
* Teaching and or/delivering workshops, lectures, and seminars
* Management of the Print Study Centre, and the Volunteer/Student Intern Program for all of the UAAC Collections
The ideal candidate will have:
* A Masters or Ph.D. in art history (contemporary art preferred), studio art or related discipline
* Evidence of significant curatorial achievement (collections research, publication, exhibitions, and collections management)
* Knowledge of museum standards and collections management practices
* Excellent skills in project management, written and oral presentations, staff and volunteer supervision
* Core competencies including: achievement orientation, analytical thinking, conceptual thinking, flexibility, impact and influence, organizational awareness, planning and initiative, self-confidence, self-development, sense of urgency, and team leadership and cooperation
