don't assume anything! i have seen many daguerreotypes of
paintings/miniatures that on first glance, especially with a little bit of
glass deterioration or tarnish, look like the real thing.

Joan Severa's book, already recommended, is super.

And a correction. The article on Richards is in the 1995 Daguerreian Annual
(not '94). The Chestnut Hill address appears to be ca. 1848-1851. There is
an illustration of the imprint on p. 210 of the article.
