Chabot Observatory & Science Center
Technology Manager

The Chabot Observatory & Science Center, a 114-year old institution located
in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, is building a new,
state-of-the-art 80,000 square ft. facility in Joaquin Miller Park,
Oakland.

POSITION SUMMARY:
        The COSC Technology Manager is responsible for all aspects of
COSC's on-going and developmental efforts involving computers, software,
networks, telecommunications and video (CSNT&V).  He/she supports the
Executive Director in planning for and designing of all new technology
initiatives for the Science Center. The technology manager works
collaboratively  with local universities, local school districts, industry
representatives, DOE laboratories and other interested parties to assure
implementation of the most cost effective systems for site use and network
outreach.  The COSC Technology Manager reports directly to the Program
Administrator.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
*       Develop and maintain a technology vision for COSC
*       Develop and maintain a technology plan for COSC
*       Implement the technology plan
*       Define all technology requirements for COSC and assure that they
are satisfied
*       Establish a management system for,  and facilitate the operations
of all COSC CSNT&V
*       Maintain a list of potential funders of technology development
projects and solicit  money, hardware and software
*       Actively support the writing and development of proposals to win
government and foundation grants
*       Support the Building Project Manager in defining and verifying the
implementation of appropriate technology in the new building
*       Hire and/or contract for all necessary technology support
activities for development and operation of all CSNT&V activities at COSC
*       Develop budgets for all CSNT&V activities and manage the budgets

QUALIFICATIONS:
*       Bachelors Degree in Science, Engineering or Mathematics
*       A  knowledge of scientific principles and scientific method
*       Minimum of five years experience with  CSNT&V including
conceptualizing, specifying, buying, installing and maintaining networked
computer systems
*       Minimum of three years experience in a leadership position
requiring independent action
*       Experience with accessing and using the Internet for communication
and information retrieval
*       Knowledge of technology, products and services for client/server
systems, telecommunications and networked systems
*       Experience in defining  CSNT&V system architectures
*       Knowledge of and working relationship with suppliers of  CSNT&V
products and services
*       Experience writing proposals
*       Good written and oral skills
*       Good interpersonal skills; team player
*       Ability to use a PC for office and administrative applications
*       Must be a self starter
*       Familiarity with applications of CSNT&V to educational programs
*       Interest in science and/or science education a plus.
