Chabot Observatory & Science Center
Director of Education

The Chabot Observatory & Science Center, a 114-year old institution located
in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, is building a new,
state-of-the-art 80,000 square ft. facility in Joaquin Miller Park,
Oakland.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Education reports directly to the Executive Director of the
Chabot Observatory & Science Center. The major role of the Director of
Education is as an active leader of the Science Center's education
programs. The Science Center's major educational focus is on teacher
training, student experiences, and families through on-site visits,
outreach programs, and the "Virtual Science Center" (direct on-line
linkages to the Science Center). All Science Center programs will be
developed reflecting the best known practices in science, inquiry-based in
nature, and integrate science and technology. The Director of Education
will have the primary responsibility for developing all educational
programs to be in place at the opening of the new Chabot Observatory &
Science Center in the fall of 1999.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
* direct participation in the development of the Science Center's programs
and classes;
* provide leadership for education and general program activities at the
current and new facility, working with the Director of Astronomy to develop
public programs;
* set clear education and program goals reflective of state and national
standards;
* design framework for the Science Center's five (5) and ten (10) year
education programs;
* identify, implement and facilitate use of the "best practices" in science
education in all Science Center education programs;
* identify and lead the development of education grant proposals;
* work with staff, Board and architects on the new Science Center facility
design;
* develop and maintain educational and professional relationships with Bay
Area school districts and regional colleges/universities
* establish, maintain, and widen contacts with sources of support from
government agencies, corporations, foundations, and individuals;
* establish short-term and long-term budgets;
* communicate program and education plans to Chabot Observatory & Science
Center Board of Directors; and
* carry out such other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* doctorate or masters degree in education or the sciences preferred
* minimum of five years education and administration experience
* demonstrated expertise in the best practices of science education
* demonstrated experience in program and class development
* demonstrated record of successful senior management performance
* research capabilities
* excellent written and oral communications
* demonstrated ability to plan and write grant requests
* strong leadership and managerial capability
* background and demonstrated strong interest in science
* the ability to work with volunteers
* works well with others; a team player
