I've heard that the Tim McCreight metalsmith book series
are great for learning techniques for building object
mounts. Is anyone familiar enough with this series to
recommend one of these?

Metals Technic: A Collection of Techniques for
Metalsmiths
Jewelry Making: Techniques for Metal
Jewelry: Fundamentals of Metalsmithing
Complete Metalsmith: Professional Edition
or
The Complete Metalsmith: An Illustrated Handbook
