I suspect, in addition to gaining additional job knowledge, you want to connect with people who may be able to assist you with your career. If you have time to do so, grab a copy of the tried and true Dale Carnegie gospel, "How to Win Friends and Influence People," probably available from your local library, and read it before you go. Failing that, at least examine the precepts offered in the Six Ways to Make People Like You section of this Wikipedia article. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_Win_Friends_and_Influence_People

While your purpose may be to promote yourself, the way to do that is to genuinely express interest in other people. Start by learning the value of a good, firm handshake. You may be shaking in your boots, but, with practice, it will become easier. Then talk WITH other people, not to them. Ask questions (without appearing boorish or nosy) and find commonalities. It shouldn't be an I, me, me mine, but rather, a two-way conversation.

In that way, you may make friends, and, most importantly, an understanding of what those friends and contacts may be able to do to assist you and your career in the future. Post-conference, you may be faced with a work-related dilemma, a how-to, and you may have in your contacts, someone or someones you can call on to give you an answer.

Now, about those business cards you take, be sure to put your Twitter handle on the back of your card. Instant way to stay in touch after the conference, and be sure to ask those you meet for cards, writing their Twitter handle on the reverse.

Remember, above all else, to have fun! If you promise yourself you're having fun, it will show on your face and make you that much more approachable.

Six Ways to Make People Like You
	1. Become genuinely interested in other people.
	2. Smile.
	3. Remember that a man's Name is to him the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
	4. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
	5. Talk in the terms of the other man's interest.
	6. Make the other person feel important and do it sincerely.
