NEH preservation grants for smaller institutionsI heartily second Laura's reminder of the PAG grant deadline of May 15. These are grants of up to $5,000 that DO NOT require a match! Where else can you get this good a deal? I have worked with a number of historic house museums on PAG funded projects such as setting up an environmental monitoring program with data loggers, or studying and implementing light control solutions, and all have seen tremendous benefits. But you really must act now. I suggest you do the following ASAP.

1) Verify that you meet the basic eligibility requirements. http://www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/pag.html

2) Set up your institution on Grants.gov immediately. I have heard from other museums that this can take a few weeks, so get going now.

3) Formulate the design for your project now. It can be customized for your organization's specific needs, and can be for a wide range of preservation activities. If possible, include the services of a conservation/preservation consultant to assist you with your project. This will not only provide you with information and guidance, but will strengthen your application in the eyes of the reviewers. In many cases, this can be included and the total project costs kept under $5,000. You can apply for projects with a budget over $5,000, but you will have to pay the excess yourself. For large projects, consider IMLS's Conservation Project Support Grant (CP), applications due October 1. http://www.imls.gov/applicants/grants/conservProject.shtm

Good luck! Please let me know if I can provide any further assistance.

  NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES
  DIVISION OF PRESERVATION AND ACCESS

Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions help small and mid-sized institutions in the United States, such as libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, town and county records offices, and colleges, improve their ability to preserve and care for their humanities collections. Awards of up to $5000 support preservation related collection assessments, consultations, and workshops, and institutional and collaborative disaster and emergency planning. Grants cover consultant fees, workshop registration fees, related travel and per diem expenses, and the costs of purchasing and shipping preservation supplies and equipment.

All applications to the NEH must be submitted through Grants.gov. See the application guidelines for details.

The 2007 guidelines for Preservation Assistance Grants for Smaller Institutions are available at http://www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/pag.html. You will also find sample project descriptions, sample narratives, and a list of frequently asked questions. The deadline for applications is May 15, 2007.

Small and mid-sized institutions that have never received an NEH grant are especially encouraged to apply.
