Dear Museum professionals,

 

The Shell Museum on Sanibel, Florida, will soon be installing a new
permanent exhibition on cowry shells. Included in the exhibit is an 18’’ New
Guinean figurine carved from light wood (and whose eyes are cowry shells.)
The object has light stain marks and some light surface discoloration.

 

I thought about using some type of wood cleaning fluid and/or oil to help
remove these flaws, but I do worry about potential preservation artifacts /
long term negative effects arising from using such products. Any suggestions
/ recommendations?
