What about the issue of comparative images, where images are side-by side
(i.e., using two projectors next to one another to show two slides on the
same screen).  Is that possible with PowerPoint?

Good question.  The big thing to think about is the longevity of the image.
If you dont care that
CD's might at some point in the future be obsolete, and therefore making
your material disappear,
then you might want to think slides.

Here is what my point is with digital images.  Take your slides, take your
images.  Scan them in.
Create your powerpoint presentation, burn your cd (or find someone to do it
for you.  Easy as pie,
costs nearly nothing now).  As for the projector issue, maybe the
department or a group of you
could band together and buy one.  My point with the Iomega Fotoshow is that
all you need is a TV.
No projector.  Of course, it may not work as well with powerpoint
presentations with the
interactivity of it, but its still cheaper.

I realize the quality of the slide is going to be less on a digital form,
but do you really plan
on blowing it up on screen to the level that you would really notice a
problem.  I certainly
understand the professional photographer having issue with digital forms.
I worked with video
where we would make a copy of a copy and the image was aweful.  However,
the ability of digial is
that once you have it scanned, it doesn't degrade.
