Hi, Pam! What I meant (which wasn't stated in a very articulate way; I
apologize) is that the author seems to take a really uncomplicated view of
a business/museum relationship. He paints Krens as a big business CEO who
couldn't care less about art or museums, only making money. I don't know
this to be true or untrue, but the critique, though valid on a lot of
levels, didn't seem to very. . .FULL. It doesn't seem to have a breadth of
research, and so, in that way, it read to me like a ranting editorial
rather than an article talking objectively about Krens' direction of the
Guggenheim. Now, it was probably meant as an editorial, meant to bring up
issues and not explore them terribly in-depth. For that, this article is
wonderful, I think.

Again, thanks, John for bringing this to the list. I think the article
brings up a number of interesting discussion points, especially about
commercialism/money and museums. Another (brief) connection I made is that
the relatively new director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago's
background is in marketing and business; he worked for Euro Disney
previously.

Pam, I hope that clarifies my ideas for you a little bit! Feel free to
contact me on or off list if that doesn't help!

Lara

Thanks Lara and John for the article and for sharing your perspectives.

I need some clarification, though, and I hope no one will take this the
wrong way or be offended. I'm not intending to attack anyone here....

Whose perspective is flawed? Lara writes that "...the author's theories
are flawed." Isn't the author of this article Jerry Saltz? From the
discussion though, I get the idea that Lara means Guggenheim CEO Thomas
Krens' perspective is flawed. That perhaps she doesn't like his approach
of mixing corporate leveraging and marketing techniques with art. Or does
she mean that she thinks that journalist Jerry Saltz's perspective is
flawed, that his critique of Krens' big business mindset is too extreme?

Help me please to better understand what you like or dislike in this
article and who do you think is off base, the journalist or the CEO?

Thank you!

Pamela Sezgin
