Lauren Kroiz, an assistant professor in the History of Art Department at the University of California, Berkeley, is the winner of the 2015 Patricia and Phillip Frost Essay Award. Kroiz's article, "'A Jolly Lark for Amateurs': John Steuart Curry's Pedagogy of Painting," appeared in the spring 2015 issue of American Art (vol. 29, no. 1).

The Frost Essay Award is presented annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution (article, interview, or commentary) to American Art, the scholarly journal of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

The prize recognizes excellence in scholarship in the field of American art history. Each year, a rotating jury of three members of the American Art editorial board reviews articles in the journal, seeking especially to honor an essay that advances our understanding of the history of the arts in America, demonstrates original research, expresses fresh ideas, and is clearly written, accessible in its language, and marked by a gracefulness of exposition. This year's jurors were Renée Ater of the University of Maryland; Elissa Auther of the Museum of Arts and Design and the Bard Graduate Center; and François Brunet of the Université Paris Diderot.

The prize carries a $1,000 award made possible by the generous contribution of the Patricia and Phillip Frost Endowment. For more information, please visit http://americanart.si.edu/research/awards/frost/.
