Well, I know there are lots of internship listings
through various museum organization newsletters and
especially through websites like museumjobs, MERC,
(and apparently not anymore for globalmuseum.org),
etc. I would like to try and compile as much
information as I can on museum conferences, though.

If I knew where to rally support for graduates
attending conferences, I myself would have a lot more
under my belt! :) As everyone knows, Graduate schools
do offer travel funds for those presenting at
conferences, but they are incredibly competitive. Even
if an ICOM young professionals organization were able
to accrue maybe $5000-10,000 per year (I'm a novice in
the field of fundraising; I don't know what sum would
be achievable and what would be naive to strive for),
graduate students could apply for a travel stipend
through our group. What sorts of foundations for
scholarship, academic advancement, education, arts and
culture, etc. are there for this sort of thing? I am a
member of Phi Beta Kappa (an organization devoted to
the advancement of scholarship) and have contacted
them about possible funding opportunities, but have
not yielded much as of yet.

I'd like to take on the responsibility of creating a
list of internship websites and resources (that will
save us the time of listing internships themselves)
and of accruing as much information as I can on
conferences occurring on various topics. ICOM itself
as an extensive calendar with conferences and
workshops listed on its site.

An ICOM young professionals organization should also
have an open forum for discussion on professional
development and experiences at this early stage in our
careers. There are so many of us in such diverse
fields of museum work (within my graduate program
alone!) that I'm convinced we can benefit greatly from
each other. Creating a strong foundation of networking
and support at this stage in our careers can only lead
to better communication and diplomacy later in life
between our respective institutions.

How can this newsletter be arranged? Who would like to
be a part of it? Is it too ambitious to create one
ICOM young professionals group or should there be
various ones?

Best wishes from Flagstaff, AZ,

Alex
