Hi all,

Any networked system can get hacked. I could spend 50% of my work time keeping up to date on Information/Data security trends and innovations. I will never be able to compare to the legion of PhD Computer Scientists that Google or Amazon have on staff whose ONLY JOB is to ensure the security of their network and their customers’ data.

Just a thought.

In this era of hacking you need to be very careful of putting any essential or proprietary data on cloud storage that can be hacked.

Hi all,

I agree with this. There is nothing like "the cloud". There are different storage capacities of different providers. I do not trust any of the big global data handlers because they can be hacked (with preference!) and were already hacked. One famous global "clouds" already named in this discussion was already 2 days out of service this year. When we accessed the cloud during these days, we got a serious virus warning from our antivirus when procceeding.

A smaller local data storage provider with top security measures would be my choice, if really needed.

If you have to store data outside your capacities you should decide first which data. Never trust important data to a cloud. They should remain within your own highly protected capacities.

After that, the next question is which files (videos, pictures, long texts). Have a look into your agreements and the legal situation: Do they prohibit external storage? Why hosting museum videos on your own server? Why storing them for eternity? And: Most pictures produced today by electronic cameras are too big in size for museum purposes.

Let me get back to the quoted sentence: In an era of sinking prices for ever-growing data storage capacities for servers, of compression technology and of decent pictorial resolutions, there are alternatives to cloud storage (with videos as an exemption).
